Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma Offers Free Lunch and Snacks to Kids During the Holidays

Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma Offers Free Lunch and Snacks to Kids During the Holidays

Many children go hungry during the holiday season once school is on break. Kids who rely on school lunches for food have limited access to good meals while school is closed, and as a result, instead of eating well during the holiday season, they go hungry.

To reach out to these kids and provide them with free, nutritious meals while school is on break, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is partnering with 10 feeding sites around the city. Children can go to any one of those locations to receive a good meal, as well as mentoring and teaching.

The 10 sites that have partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma are Camp Village YMCA, Neighborhoods in Action, Salvation Army B&GC, St. Jude Missionary Baptist, McKinley Park, I Can Family Center, Downtown YMCA, North Side YMCA, Northwest Optimist, and Urban League.

Free lunches and afternoon snacks will be given to kids from December 18 to January 3, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Utilizing A Closet Light

Utilizing A Closet Light

The closet is a space in the home in which lighting is mostly overlooked or neglected. By adding a light fixture to your closet, you will increase visibility and give your closet a more pleasant ambiance.

One of the easiest ways to add closet light is by installing a surface-mount, battery powered fixture. These lights are usually small and dome-shaped. Most models have various levels of flexibility. These types of closet lights are most effective in small closets because they don’t produce much light. They are also inexpensive and easy to install. Opt for ones that turn themselves off after a short period of time to save you from frequently buying replacement batteries.

LED lighting is another great closet lighting option, since it doesn’t produce much heat. It is a new trend that could instantly change the look of your closet. They can easily be installed anywhere by using battery powered devices and it offers perfect illumination. It also come in a stick-and-peel or drill mounting system that is perfect for anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable doing electrical work. Its price ranges from $6.50 to $12.00.*

You can also hang up a corded fixture and connect it to the circuit wiring following the manufacturer’s wiring diagram. Mount the fixture to the box using the fixture mounting strap and screws provided. Turn off the power to the source circuit at the home’s service panel or breaker box and make sure the circuit can safely accommodate the additional demand of the new fixture. Check if the bulb is well protected, since closets tend to be filled with flammable material and incandescent bulbs get very hot. Make sure that it will not come in contact with clothing or other flammable materials.

Most building codes require enclosed or recessed fixtures if incandescent bulbs are used in closets. All electrical installations should obey the local building code. You can consult your city’s building department for recommendations and applicable code requirements.

Evaluate the desired location and intensity of the light in your closet. Good closet lighting is a commonly overlooked feature of your house.  Make sure you give it the attention it deserves.

Helpful Walk-In Closet Ideas for Every Home

Helpful Walk-In Closet Ideas for Every Home

Walk-in closets are one of the most appreciated rooms when a home is bought or sold because they offer homeowners a place to store clothing and important belongings without feeling cramped.  Walk-in closet designs can make your life easier and save you time, and there are many different ways you can create the perfect walk-in closet design for you.

1. Consider the dimensions. A walk-in closet should ideally be at least 66 inches long with a door at least 7 feet high in order to feel spacious.

2. Choose a door. This will enable you to shut the door to your closet when you are done, so you won’t have to look at stored items unless you want to.

3. Install adjustable shelves. This will give you space to store things of different sizes. Shoe shelves are very popular and you can find them in all sorts of models and sizes.

5. Have sufficient lighting. This will allow you to pick out outfits wisely and avoid ending up with stained or mismatched attire.

6. Get storage baskets. Small items such as socks and underwear should be placed built-in drawers or storage boxes. You can even roll up your pajamas or night gowns and put them in storage boxes to free up space on the clothing rack.

7. Add a pull-down hanger bar. This type of hanger bar stays up and out of reach most of the time, but when you are ready to use it, there is a rope you can pull down to bring it out.  A hanger bar allows you to use the lower areas of your closet for drawers or other means of storage.

Time to Clean Your Upholstered Furniture

Time to Clean Your Upholstered Furniture

Upholstered furniture can be very expensive.  Some are covered in high quality leather or suede, while others have polyester or hypoallergenic material. Upholstered furniture is more comfortable and tends to be more appealing than the plain, bare furniture.

If you have upholstered furniture, it is important to know the basic principles of how to clean and maintain it. There are even some upholstery cleaning tips that can help you revive old pieces. By following a few simple tips, you can easily learn how to clean furniture effectively.

  1. Lightly brush and vacuum all upholstered surfaces weekly, including the crevices behind, under, and between the cushions, as well as the cushions themselves. Your upholstery naturally absorbs small particles of dirt, oil, and debris every time someone sits down, so it is important to remove that residue so it doesn’t build up.
  2. Wipe away any spills the minute they happen. Don’t let them sit too long or seep through the fabric to the wood underneath because that will make them more difficult to clean. Treat the spot with a stain remover specifically designed for upholstery fabric. Test it on a small,  inconspicuous piece of the furniture first to make sure it won’t ruin your upholstery before you apply it all over.
  3.  Protection is the easiest way to keep things clean. Make some rules regarding how the furniture is used. Don’t allow anyone to eat or put their shoes on any of the furniture to avoid stains and dirt on your furniture.
  4. Use a dry sponge to remove dirt, grime, and pet hair that cannot be cleaned by a vacuum cleaner. A dry sponge can work wonders and is washable.
  5. Use a good fabric protector when it comes to upholstery cleaning. This can make removing stains a simple matter of blotting up a spill with a clean cloth. Always blot up spills with a clean cloth right away, but never rub them or they will seep into the fabric.
