Residents of Edmond will be enjoying more public facilities soon thanks to the three major construction projects in the city. The Public Safety Center, Summit Sports Complex and the Edmond YMCA Recreation and Aquatic Center are already expected to serve the public next year and in 2015.
The first project to be completed will be the Edmond YMCA Recreation and Aquatic Center, which will open to the public on February 3. The center will be located next to the Multi-Activity Center at Mitch Park. There will be a fitness facility with 50 pieces of cardio equipment, a geothermal facility with an Olympic-size swimming pool, an indoor elevated running track, and a leisure pool with a life guard and splash pad for kids. Additional facilities will include birthday party rooms, a child care center, and locker rooms.
The $27.5 million Public Safety Center will be constructed at First Street and Littler Avenue and is expected to be completed by 2015. It will house police headquarters along with laboratories, a jail basement, emergency management operations, and the 911 communication center.
The $16 million Summit Sport Complex will be constructed on the northeast corner of Interstate 35 and Covell Road. The 155,000-square-foot facility will house 8 basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts, and 2 indoor soccer fields. Three hotels are also being planned inside the complex along with available space for food services, offices, meeting space, and medical and physical therapy areas.
