New Multi-use Soccer Complex Planned for Oklahoma City Woodson Park

People love going to parks, not just to surround themselves with natural scenery, but also to enjoy their convenient amenities like fields, gyms, and playgrounds.

Woodson Park in Oklahoma City will be expanding its amenities soon with a new multi-use soccer complex that is planned for construction. The new complex will reside on a currently underused part of the park located on the west side of Interstate 44.

According to the improvement plan, the park will be repurposing its existing softball fields to give way to a multipurpose field that will cater to both adults and youth. There will be three fields for adults and fifteen fields for youth.

There will also be an addition of a baseball fields, basketball court, and playground. Other facilities will include restrooms, parking lots, spectator areas, and ADA-accessible concessions.

The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department will be operating the entire complex, and the estimated cost of construction is $5.2 million.

Simple Ways to Clean Stainless Steel

Simple Ways to Clean Stainless Steel

Many kitchens contain some form of stainless steel, from large and small appliances to sinks and cookware. Stainless steel neither corrodes nor rusts, which adds to the aesthetic reasons for buying it. The durability of this material also makes it a desirable investment for many homeowners, as it is both reliable and adds to the value of the home.

In order to maintain its reliability, however, you need to know how to clean it properly. Cleaning or polishing stainless steel materials is much easier than you think. There is no need to use expensive or specialty store-bought cleaners or any toxic chemicals for this type of cleaning. Here are several inexpensive but effective ways to clean the stainless steel items around your home:

  1. Prepare your stainless steel before you clean. Make sure that there is no stuck food on your stainless steel cookware by rinsing them thoroughly after you have used them. You should take the same approach when you clean stainless steel appliance surfaces. Completely remove all dust and grease before wiping or else it can scratch the surface.
  2. Wash your stainless steel with warm water. You don’t have to use cleaning agents to treat light to moderate spots. Just gently wipe off the surface with a soft cloth using warm water. Then, with a clean towel, dry the surface completely to avoid the formation of mineral solids and streaks on the surface.
  3. Remove rust spots with baking soda. Rust spots can be caused by leaving pots and pans in the sink. Remove these by mixing baking soda and water or cream of tartar and lemon juice. Leave the mixture on the rust spot for thirty minutes to an hour if the spot doesn’t come off right away.
  4. Avoid using steel mesh scourers or wool scrubbing pads. Their abrasiveness can damage the surface. Instead, use nylon or other mild pads or sponges for removing tougher stains and scratches.
  5. Make sure to avoid cleaners that contain chlorine. Chlorine can damage stainless steel surfaces. Ammonia is a better choice.

OKC's First Tuition-Free Charter School Downtown Opens in August

A good, quality education is essential for every child, but not all children are able to attend the school they desire, given their family’s financial situation.

John Rex Elementary is a new public charter school that will be tuition-free for all students. It will initially accept enrollees from pre-K to the second grade in August and eventually open its doors to students through sixth grade.

The new charter school will be located in downtown Oklahoma City at the corner of Sheridan and Walker. It is a three-story building with a capacity of 500 students. Total funding for the new school has been $12 million, which was taken from the Maps for Kids program.

John Rex Elementary is a partnership between the OKC Public Schools and the University of Oklahoma. It hopes to serve all children who are living in the downtown area.

Feng Shui Tips for Your Garden

Feng Shui Tips for Your Garden

A garden, despite being found outdoors, is considered to be a main attraction of a home. This is where homeowners can relax and indulge in gardening hobbies or hold casual conversations with guests and family members. For those who believe in the principles of Feng Shui, the garden is among the areas of a home that can be manipulated to harbor positive energy and achieve prosperity in the household.

If you want to bring balance and harmony to your existing environment and attract the things that you are yearning for, it is advisable to focus on your entire environment. Your entire environment includes your garden, the area right outside the boundary, and the interior of your home, so you must apply Feng Shui principles on all of these areas.

In Feng Shui, there is a place for every element and good Feng Shui depends on integrating and balancing all of those elements. To incorporate Feng Shui into your garden or outdoor landscape, it is necessary to include water, metal, fire, wood, and stone. This creates harmony outdoors, and a tranquil and comfortable feeling.

Placing a body of water – such as ponds, pools, or fountains – in the garden is one of the classic features of Feng Shui outdoors. Water is considered to be the universal symbol of abundance, and in order to be effective, there are rules that must be followed, especially regarding its placement. Any body of water increases good energy, but it is important to keep the water clean, clear and fresh. Running water is preferable to stagnant water since the latter attracts destructive energy. It is also  better that the flow of water be towards the house rather than away from it since water represents wealth. These are only some of the rules to be followed when placing water features in your garden.

Since Feng Shui is all about balance and harmony, it makes sense to add other elements to your garden beyond water. You can add a fireplace or grilling area to achieve the element of fire. You can also add items made of stone, such as boulders or statues. For wood, aside from the plants, you can use wooden tables and chairs or wooden beams as along the edges of your flower beds.

Steps for Painting Your Concrete Rendered Walls

Steps for Painting Your Concrete Rendered Walls

Painting your walls is the easiest and cheapest way to instantly change the look and feel of a room. A fresh coat of paint can brighten up everything and provide a new, clean, fresh palette for additional decorating. Painting a certain section of your home can make it look complete different, especially if the wall surfaces are concrete.

If you have concrete rendered walls, follow these steps for properly painting them:

  1. Determine the material used in the concrete wall. You need to know if your wall is made of acrylic or cement render. Acrylic render looks like a cement counterpart of paint. On the other hand, cement render looks grainier and is more likely to be used in textured finishing styles.
  2. If your wall is made with acrylic, apply a coat of sealant to the wall and let it dry for a couple of hours. Once it is dry, run your hand over the wall to check if the finish is abrasive or smooth. If the wall feels fairly smooth, a second coat is unnecessary. However, if it still feels rough and uneven, apply another coat and let it dry for an entire day.
  3. Use a power circular sander with gauge paper. It helps to remove any grooves that may have dried up in the rendering. Use a clean paintbrush to get rid of the dirt on the walls and use a wax coat to top it off. Apply the coat three times and let each layer dry before applying a new one.
  4. Use a roller or brush to apply your chosen concrete paint. Allow it to dry for two hours before you apply the next coat. Examine the surface from various angles to determine if you need to add any final touches. Seal off every single groove to create a smooth, bright wall coating.

Maintaining good health is essential for us to live a longer and happier life. If we want to continue living without the worry of developing detrimental health conditions, we must find ways to keep our body in good condition at all times.

Being overweight plays a significant role in poor health. When our bodies are carrying around more weight than what is naturally intended, it makes it harder for our body to function properly, and we are exposing ourselves to potential illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure. To ensure that doesn’t happen, regular exercise and a balanced diet are key.

To help Oklahomans who are ready to shed some pounds, the Oklahoma City-County Health Department is offering a weight loss program called Total Wellness this January. It is a 12-week class that teaches participants how to lose weight, how to maintain a healthy body, and other key factors that affect weight loss. Different topics will be tackled including how to reduce body weight, how to increase physical activity, dietary changes, and developing a healthier lifestyle.

Classes will be held for one hour every week. The goal is for each participant to lose 5% of their body weight and be active for 2 1/2 hours every week. Health screenings will also be provided for free to all participants.
