OKC's First Tuition-Free Charter School Downtown Opens in August

A good, quality education is essential for every child, but not all children are able to attend the school they desire, given their family’s financial situation.

Now, however, more Oklahoma City children will have the opportunity to attend a  high-quality school with the opening of a new charter school this August. John Rex Elementary is a new public charter school that will be tuition-free for all students. It will initially accept enrollees from pre-K to the second grade in August and eventually open its doors to students through sixth grade.

The new charter school will be located in downtown Oklahoma City at the corner of Sheridan and Walker. It is a three-story building with a capacity of 500 students. Total funding for the new school has been $12 million, which was taken from the Maps for Kids program.

John Rex Elementary is a partnership between the OKC Public Schools and the University of Oklahoma. It hopes to serve all children who are living in the downtown area.
