Oklahoma City Chosen for Redevelopment of Abandoned Properties Program

Oklahoma City Chosen for Redevelopment of Abandoned Properties Program

Old buildings provide an historical attraction to a city.  They symbolize a city’s history and allow people to connect to the past as they move forward with the new. However, the downside to older buildings is that many of them become abandoned and fall into disrepair, sometimes for years, thus becoming eye sores.

A study last year in Oklahoma City revealed that there are more than 12,000 abandoned buildings throughout the city. The City Council, as a result, is acting on an ordinance that will require old buildings to be registered with the city government. This will help the city plan ways to address these buildings and determine whether to demolish them for new structures or redevelop them.

Recently, The Community Progress Leadership Institute chose Oklahoma City as one of eight cities nationwide that will undergo a training program on the redevelopment of abandoned properties. The training will be held in Boston in March and will help the local government look for ways to bring back the vacant buildings in ways that are beneficial to the community.

Five Ways to Protect Your Garage Floor

Five Ways to Protect Your Garage Floor

The garage floor is an area that often gets overlooked despite its need to up with lots of wear and tear. Your garage floor must endure many elements, such as water, road salt, ice, oil, and grease. Fortunately, however, there are ways to protect your garage floor.

Here are a few tips for keeping your garage floor looking clean and new:

  1. Epoxy coating. This has been tested and shown to be the most economical and functional way to protect your garage floor. It has resin that strongly binds to the concrete, giving a strong and durable finish that is usually resistant to both chemicals and stains. It is available in variety of finishes and endless array of colors.
  2. Mats. Mats that are made specifically for garage floors are another excellent way to protect your floor. They are made of stronger materials than common floor rugs that can last for a longer period of time. If oil or grease spills, the mat absorbs it, so it does not reach your floor.
  3. Polyurethane. This material offers the best protection against compound spills. It also gives a shiny finish to your floor. Just make sure you apply a primer coat first in order for it to stick to the concrete.
  4. Floor tiles. Tiles that are specifically made to be used in garages are another way to provide tough protection with little maintenance. They help insulate the floor, which reduces the dampness of the surface. PVC is the most preferred tile for garages, as it easily interlocks and is also stain resistant.
  5. Latex. This lesser expensive paint option can create a cool look on your garage floor and comes in a wide range of colors and patterns that resemble wood and other materials. It takes at least three days to fully dry once you have applied it.

Oklahoma Bill Giving Incentives to Small Businesses is Approved by Senate

Oklahoma Bill Giving Incentives to Small Businesses is Approved by Senate

Small businesses in the state of Oklahoma may soon have a way to receive extra support from the State of Oklahoma. This week, the Senate approved the Small Employer Quality Jobs Incentive Act, and it is now moving to the House for hearing. The bill will provide small businesses with a five percent cash-back incentive for up to seven years if they start their businesses in Oklahoma or expand within the state.

There are certain requirements that small businesses must meet in order to qualify. Those who have 90 employees or less may qualify as long as they are located in counties with a population of less than 200,000. Businesses in an opportunity zone may also qualify.

According to Senator Ron Sharp, small businesses that are located in highly-populated areas are not able to qualify for the incentives, which he does not agree week.  As a result, he is proposing Senate Bill 1329, which would remove the population limits in the Incentive Act, so small businesses within large areas would be able to have the same opportunity to qualify.

Different Types of Garage Doors

Different Types of Garage Doors

If you are considering buying a new or replacement garage door, there are plenty of options available to you. Each style has different features and benefits, so here are a few facts about the most common types of garage doors to aid you in your search:

  1. Steel Garage Door. This is one of the most popular styles of garage doors on the market. They are easy to maintain, but the downsides are that steel does not insulate well and it dents easily.
  2. Swing Hand Door. This is a traditional style that is hinged to the side of the garage door opening and functions like a typical door. It is not suitable for homes that have narrow driveways because it requires a lot of space.
  3. Panel Door. This type of door slides up and over the garage’s ceiling on a fixed track and can easily be automated. It requires enough headroom within the garage to be able to slide all the way back without hitting anything. The benefit of this type of door is that it doesn’t need space outside the garage to fully open, making it perfect for narrow or short driveways.
  4. Roller Door. This is another space saving type of door that doesn’t even need to be stored within the ceiling space above your garage. It simply rolls up around a drum above the opening. It is often made from narrow aluminium strips that can easily fold.
  5. Sliding door. This is a twofold door that runs along tracks at the top and bottom of the door.   The door slides open to one side of the entryway. It can be a very versatile style as long as the space within the garage is not restricted.

Tips for Cleaning Your Dryer Vent

Tips for Cleaning Your Dryer Vent

Cleaning your dryer vent frequently is an important part of owning it. Clean vents improve the efficiency of your dryer and lower energy costs, but most importantly, they reduce the fire hazard in your home. Every year in the United States alone, dryer vents causes an average of 15, 000 home fires with over $90 million in damages. That is why it is so important for every homeowner to be aware of how to properly maintain their dryer.

Here are several tips you can follow to clean your dryer vents:

  1. Make sure you check the lint screen before you start the machine and clean it before you start a load. If there is a lot of build up, unplug the dryer and disconnect the vent from the dryer. Use your hand or a vacuum cleaner hose to clear and loosen the lint and debris in your vent. Then, securely attach the ends back to the wall and dryer and run your dryer on air for a few minutes to blow it out.
  2. If you find a huge build up of lint in the middle of the vent, use a plumbing snake to pull it out. A coat hanger or dowel can be used if the path is fairly straight, but you must be careful because it can puncture the material and even cause leaks.
  3. When the dryer is in operation, visually inspect the exterior hood of the vent. If you observe the flaps moving and you can feel the airflow, then the vents are working fine. If not, then you should get it inspected.
  4.  You can call a professional when doing intensive dryer vent cleaning if you encounter situations such as lose or disconnected vents or vents with too many angles and bends. A dryer vent cleaning professional will have cleaning equipment that is appropriate for the situation.

Dryer vent cleaning is not difficult and can save you money in energy costs as well as protect you against fires.  Take a few minutes to clean it each time you do the laundry, and you will avoid problems and keep your machine functioning well for many years to come.

New K9 Police Dogs in Training for Oklahoma City Police

New K9 Police Dogs in Training for Oklahoma City Police

Most police departments throughout the country have K9 police dogs, whose intelligence and agility assist them with capturing criminals and detecting illegal substances. The Oklahoma City Police force currently has nine dogs, which are of huge benefit to them – in 2013 alone, the dogs helped police catch 166 suspects. Sadly, however, two police dogs recently passed away.

To bring back the full strength of the K9 unit, police officers are now training two new German Shepherds. These dogs are pure-bred males and were obtained oversees. According to the police officers, male dogs are more independent, smarter, and more loyal than female dogs, and they are easier to train for police work.
