Helpful Tips for Fixing a Leaky Roof

Having a leaky roof is every homeowner’s nightmare, as it can cause major damage to your property and reduce the value of your home. A leaky roof is one of the most time-consuming and frustrating home repairs to address because it is often difficult to find the problem. Identifying where the roof is leaking is not always easy, and even once you find it, it can be difficult to proceed. Most people automatically hire a professional for roof repairs; however, the downfall is that you will spend more money on the project as a result.

There are often simple ways to solve larger problems on your own by using a few common household materials in innovative ways. The first thing you need to do is to find the source of the leak and determine the exact cause of it. You can crawl into your attic to locate the source of a leak and then apply a temporary, emergency patch of prepared leak sealant to stop the water. Leak sealants are available at hardware stores in cans that can be applied using a putty knife or in tubes that can be applied with a putty gun.

Make sure your roof’s valleys, gutters, and downspouts are clear of debris and allow water to move freely off the roof and away from your house. Remove any blockages and clear the downspouts if they are clogged. You can remove the downspout from the gutter and clear it by using long object, such as broom handle, to push the debris out of the pipe. Reattach the downspout to the gutter and direct the water away from the foundation.

Roof flashing is another option to repair a roof leak. Simply apply bitumen to seal the holes if you find any loose nails on your roof. You can use roof flashing to patch any signs of corrosion holes that are up to about 2 cm wide. Cut a piece from the roof flashing that is larger than the hole, roughen up the surface, so the bitumen will stick to it properly, and then place the patch on the hole and seal it with the bitumen.

Roof leaks should be fixed immediately once they are detected because they can quickly turn into larger problems if left unaddressed.  Take necessary precautions to limit damage to your roof, so you can enjoy a peaceful existence and maintain the value of your home.
