Kitchen Countertops: What to Consider

Kitchen Countertops What to Consider

Choosing countertops is one of the most important decisions you will make when it comes to designing your kitchen. Countertops are integral not only to the functionality of your kitchen, but also to its overall appearance and aesthetic appeal.

There are certain things you should keep in mind when selecting countertops for your kitchen, as there are many materials to choose from. Stone countertops are currently the most popular choice, as they are easy to clean and incredibly durable. Granite is the most popular amongst stone countertops, and it suits both traditional and ultra-modern styles alike. It is available in different colors, patterns, and textures and is scratch and burn resistant, which makes it a very practical choice. Granite countertops can be expensive, but the quality of the material makes it well worth the cost. It also does a lot to increase the value of your home, and you are sure to recoup your monetary investment should you ever decide to sell your home.

Another, less common, material you can use for countertops is wood.  Wood offers a great look and adds lots of character to a kitchen. Oak, maple, cherry, red beech, walnut, and mahogany are all hardwoods that are well-suited to countertops. The downside to wood countertops is that they are less durable and  highly susceptible to scratching and cutting. They aren’t heat resistant either, so hot pans will easily burn wooden countertops and leave marks. They also require more maintenance than stone countertops and must be periodically oiled with tung oil to protect them from stains.

Your budget will obviously play an important role in determining which countertops to use as well. There is a large range of price points, however, so you are guaranteed to find something that will fit within your means. If you are looking for something top of the line, consider granite worktops. However, if you are working with a smaller budget, it may be smarter to opt for laminate countertops, as they are significantly less expensive. They have many colors and patterns to choose from as well and are very easy to clean and maintain.

Ultimately, your kitchen must be efficient, clean, and functional, so make your choices based upon what is best for your family and how you use your kitchen on a daily basis.
