Foyer Lighting: Enhance the Entry to Your Home

Lighting your foyer is essential to home staging and decor as the foyer is the first room that guests will see when they enter. Great foyer lighting will set a great first impression of what the rest of the home is like.

A foyer is generally referred as the entrance lobby, which requires large lighting fixtures for better visibility and to improve visual appeal. Before searching for foyer lighting, you need to determine its appropriate size. Take the sum of the width and length dimensions of the room to determine the ideal width of your foyer light. Consider as well the height of your foyer’s ceiling. A hanging fixture should fall at least 7’ from floor, but be tall enough not to look flat in the large space.

There are various types of lighting you can use to enhance the look of the entire house. Chandeliers are a timeless choice for foyer lighting. Other fixtures such as bowl pendants and spot-lighting are quickly gaining popularity since they offer a slightly more casual look and diffused light quality. Spot-lighting is often used to flatten a surface and it is lit through overhead lights. You can use this type of lighting if you want to highlight specific parts of the foyer, which can have a pleasantly dramatic effect.

If the ceiling in your foyer is not high enough for a hanging fixture, you can opt for a semi-flush mount. Semi-flush lights offer more widespread illumination than flush lights and are also available in highly upscale styles.

Consider placing your foyer lighting on a dimmer switch so that you can change the level of lighting according to the time of the day. With this tool, it is easy to create any specific ambiance you are looking for. Dimmer switches are another essential tool in home improvement convenience and are relatively simple and inexpensive to install.

Remember that foyer lighting may be seen from the second story if a stairway provides access to the upper level of the home from the entry way area. Make sure that whatever lighting you select, the foyer will look good from whatever vantage point is viewed. Your home’s entry sets the tone for the rest of your home, so choose a high-quality design that truly represents your unique style.

Oklahoma Law Enforcers Continue To Buy Gifts For Grandkids

Oklahoma Law Enforcers Continue to Buy Gifts for Grandkids

Many children in unfortunate family circumstances are being raised by their grandparents and not by their parents. Some of these children have lost their own parents young while others have been abandoned. In either situation, many of them are still fortunate enough to have family that will look after them, such their grandparents.

Unfortunately, some grandparents struggle with their everyday finances and this can create a significant impact on their grandchildren. Even something as small as a gift for Christmas may not be feasible due to their low financial status.

That is why law enforcers in Oklahoma are shopping for Christmas gifts to give to these grand kids. This will be one way for the kids to receive at least one gift during the holidays.

The program started 13 years ago, buying gifts for less than 50 kids in its first year. Now, as more support rises in the community for this cause, the program has given gifts to as many as 600 kids.

Police officers from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma City Police and Midwest City Police as well as other volunteers and partners are joining together to gather more funds to buy gifts for as many children as they can. Gifts will be given to kids who are raised by their grandparents.

Some of the items being requested by the kids are toys, underwear, socks, blankets and even shampoos and soaps. This year, the program has raised nearly $20,000, which could mean that each child can receive gifts worth up to $30. Once gifts are bought and wrapped, they will be given away to the kids during the big holiday party and gift giveaway on Saturday, December 6th.

How To Spot Water Damage Before It Damages Your Home

How To Spot Water Damage Before It Damages Your Home

There are some homeowners who procrastinate when it comes to resolving their water damage issues. It’s never a good idea to let this type of problem go unresolved over a long period of time. Water damage can make a room look aesthetically unappealing, especially if the issue occurs in noticeable places such as the walls, ceilings or even the floors. One spot or stain could throw everything off.

Another reason water damage should be resolved immediately is because of the mold that could eventually form. It is important to have it removed early on or at the onset as mold tends to spread dramatically over time.

Problems like these can be avoided with a little bit of routine maintenance. You can regularly check problem areas at least once every six months. The areas of your house that may be at greater risk are usually ones where water supply pipes pass through. These includes kitchens, bathrooms, wash machines, water heaters and anywhere else in the house where water is going to or from. Look for any discoloration around the water supply pipes, drains, traps, hoses, cabinets, floors, walls and even ceiling.

If you find any types of discoloration or spotting, inspect the area above for any signs of damage that may cause water leaks. Check your attic regularly for any signs of water infiltration. Pay special attention to the roof and the flashing where the roof meets the wall. Look for any damaged and cracked or curled shingles on your roof’s exterior.

Make sure your home’s gutter can handle a heavy rain. If it starts to overflow, then it starts to be regularly cleaned to keep them free of leaves. You can install a screen in your gutter to keep the leaves out.

Standing water anywhere near your house is also a matter of concern and should immediately be looked into. Look for small puddles of water in and around your house. A puddle could be due to poor drainage in your yard that makes water flow toward your house.

You can save yourself much time and money by paying close attention to details and avoid falling victim to water damage in your home.

OG&E Awards Oklahoma City Public School with $500,000 Rebate Check

Energy efficiency is important as it promotes cutting cost while at the same time helping the environment. When we save energy, there are fewer resources used and a significant reduction in energy costs

With these energy efficient efforts, the district is expected to save 2,000 kilowatts of energy each year. OG&E Commercial Energy Efficiency Program will reward the district with $250 per kilowatt of energy saved. The rebate received is expected to cover the cost of about one-third of the total improvements implemented.

Electronic Road-Signs Ready for Full Use!

Electronic Road-Signs Ready for Full Use

Traffic signs serve a very important function: to keep drivers and pedestrian well-informed and safe. Signs are placed in strategic areas so they can guide drivers in the correct directions as they pass through a city or state.

In Oklahoma, electronic signs have been installed and tested for driver’s convenience. These electronic signs offer drivers passing through the Interstate useful information. Recently, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has conducted its final round of testing on 21 electronic signs across the city. The signs have been constructed along I-35, I-44 and on Broadway Extension.

The electronic signs will be providing real-time information about traffic as well as weather-related road closures. There will also be travel information, Silver Alerts and Amber Alerts. Sensors will be used to measure car speeds and post these to the signs. This information will be posted from 6am – 9am and 3pm – 6pm every weekday. Boards will be in full use starting on November 10th.

In addition to the existing electronic signs, there are also signs to be installed near the borders of Arkansas, Kansas and Texas.
